Volumes 1 and 2

by Monsignor Patrick Boylan

Now in one beautiful volume!

Msgr. Boylan’s acclaimed twin commentaries on Scripture readings are inspiration for priests and laypersons alike. Considered one of the finest Scripture scholars of his day, Msgr. Patrick Boylan was best known for his popular commentaries on the Sunday Epistles and Gospels, which were published in two volumes in 1941. For years they were heavily employed by priests as inspiration for preaching, and by laiety seeking to obtain more from the readings at Mass.

This handsome two-in-one volume includes: Epistle and Gospel readings for every Sunday of the year, extensive “Notes” on each reading, “Thoughts for Preaching,” and more.

The translation of each Epistle and Gospel was directly from the Greek, so as to stimulate fresh insights and clarify precise meanings. Line-by-line commentaries on the readings provide historical context, explain symbols and obscure references, resolve linguistic difficulties, and point to other relevant passages in both Old and New Testaments. References to Church documents and other definitive sources are noted. Instead of supplying ready-made sermons, the “Thoughts for Preaching” draw out moral and spiritual lessons, highlight doctrinal significance, and suggest applications to everyday life and to timely issues.

This work is intended to help the Clergy in the preparation of sermons based on the Sunday Epistles and Gospels. The translation of the Epistles and Gospels contained in the work has been made directly from the Greek. It’s aim is to give as clearly as possible the exact sense of the Greeek originals. The version may no be read to the people at public worship, but, used along with the official version (The Vulgate), it will serve to give that clear understanding of the Scripture passages without wihich they cannot be successfully used as the basis of preaching. besiders, an unfamiliar rendering of the Sacred Texts may stimulate reflection on the wealth of meaning which they contain.
