The Cord of St. Joseph: a white cord braided of 100% cotton. One end with a knot and seven knots at the other end, which hang down after the cord is tied around the waist. The seven knots are in honor of the seven sorrows and the seven joys of St. Joseph.

Those who wear the cord of St. Joseph are exhorted to say seven Glorias each day.

The wearing of a cord or cincture has always been a sign of chastity as well as mortification and humility. The wearing of a cord in honor of a saint goes back to ancient times. The wearing of a cord in honor of St. Michael was general throughout France.

We find the first instance mentioned in the life of St. Monica. St. Monica in a vision from the Blessed Virgin received from her a black leathern belt, and assured that those who wore it in her honor would be under her protection.

After his conversion St. Francis girded himself with rough cords in honor of the cords that bound Our Lord, during His passion. St. Dominic received his cord from St. Francis, and out of devotion to the saint wore it out of sight under his clothing.

The cord of St. Philomena was a pious practice after many miracles and her confaternity was raised to an Archconfraternity.

The Archconfraternity of the cord of St Joseph: the miraculous cure of an Augustinian nun in 1657 gave rise to the pious practice of wearing it to obtain the grace of purity through his intercession. Pius IX approved a special formula for blessing of the cord of St. Joseph (see 1964 Roman Ritual).

The indulgence associated with the cord of St. Joseph are numerous.

The cord of St. Joseph and other worn around the waist is for purity and chastity, among other things. When worn sash style across one shoulder, it is for obedience.

St. Joseph, patron of departing souls, pray for us.
